Descriptions about public health nursing care activities were extracted from “Health Teaching in Towns and Villages: Rural Hygiene” (Nightingale, 1894/1974), and they were analyzed qualitatively. As a result, the descriptions were summarized to the following 7 categories: ① the ardor to sympathize with community people that stems from my interest in helping others, ② developing relationships to familiarize oneself with the residents’ life, ③ the ability to confront situations making full use of the fi ve senses, ④ promoting speaking and cooperating about the residents’ plan to engage together in living places, ⑤ reforming the customs by continuous engagement in activities, ⑥ enhancing the participation of important members of an area who support public health nurses, and ⑦ being proud of one’s work as a public health nurse who is involved in public hygiene.
